What is a towel topper?
A towel topper is a piece of fabric that helps hang your kitchen towels.
You see, an oven handle is the perfect place for in-use kitchen towels. It’s right there, in the middle of the action! Unfortunately, the towels slide off the handle when you open the oven door, hang them unevenly, brush against them, or look at the towels the wrong way.
Using a kitchen towel topper makes it easier to dry your hands without having to readjust the towel every time. Plus, they’re cute! Especially crochet flower towel toppers like the one below. 🙂

Crochet Towel Topper – Pattern Inspiration
The initial inspiration for the crochet towel topper pattern was the flower face scrubbies pattern. You’ll notice similar double crochet petals in the pattern below, and in the Flower Earrings pattern.
I actually designed two different versions of the Flower Towel Topper front. One with two rows of flower petals and the other with three. Which option is your favorite?

Tools Needed to Crochet the Flower Towel Topper
Since we’re back in the kitchen, you know you’ll need worsted weight cotton yarn. For the sample crochet towel toppers, I used Dishie from WeCrochet in the color “Azure.” This is one of my favorite bright blue yarns, so you may recognize this color from the Luna Wristlet Keychain, Simple Mug Rugs, and the Divine Dice Bag patterns.
Next, grab an H 5.0 mm crochet hook. The cute polka dot hook featured in the pictures is from WeCrochet’s Dots hook set. They’re adorable and affordable ergonomic hooks that you can pick up for about $30 per set. I use mine all the time.
Finally, let’s talk crochet tools. This pattern uses standard notions like scissors, a tapestry needle, and a few locking stitch markers. I used four stitch markers, but you could get away with two.
Special Materials: Rings and Buttons
In the center of each towel topper is a 2-3 inch ring. This lets you remove your kitchen towels for easier washing, or to swap out for holidays. I used clear plastic shower curtain rings (grab them at Amazon or any big box store). You can also use wooden rings or clear plastic rings without connectors.
You also need to be able to attach and detach your towel topper from the oven handle. For this, we use a short strap and a one inch button.
Yarn Substitutions
If you don’t have Dishie on hand or it’s not available in your country, feel free to substitute another #4 worsted weight cotton yarn. I’ve also used Lily Sugar n Cream and Premier Home Cotton, and both would work for the crochet kitchen towel topper pattern.
How to Crochet the Towel Topper
First, you’ll crochet the towel topper’s back, including the towel ring. Next, choose which version of the front you’d like to crochet. Join the two sides together and add a hanging loop with a button. Weave in your ends, choose your towel, and hang that sh*t!

Joining Front and Back of Towel Topper
Lay the back side face down so the ring is facing up. Using two stitch markers, mark off 14 stitches along the bottom. These will remain unworked when you join the front and back.
Place the front on top of the back with the wrong sides together. Line up the working st with the first stitch marker. Insert your hook into the front loop of the front side and the back loop of the back side, make a sl st.
sl st around, ending with the stitch marked by your second stitch marker. Use the front loops of the front/flower side and back loops of the back/ring side. Trim yarn and weave in ends.
Hanging Loop for Your Crochet Towel Topper
From the first and last sl sts, count 15 sts toward the middle and place another stitch marker to mark off the hanging loop. Your stitch markers should be 6 sts apart.
ROW 1: join yarn at first stitch marker, ch 2, dc 5 (6)
ROWS 2 – 4: ch 2 and turn, dc across (6)
To change the length of the hanging loop (for thicker oven handles or thin towel bars), add or remove rows here.
ROW 5: ch 2 and turn, dc, ch 2, sk 2, dc 2 (6)
Skipping two stitches creates the buttonhole. If you have a smaller button or stretchy yarn, use single crochets (sc) for ROW 5.
ROW 6: ch 2 and turn, dc across (6)
Trim yarn and weave in ends. Sew the button between ROW 3 and 4, centered below the hanging loop.

Is crocheting a towel topper easy?
This is an intermediate skill level pattern. It uses standard crochet stitches, but you’ll use increases, stitch combinations, and simple seaming. Read more about pattern difficulty at the American Crochet Association or the Craft Yarn Council.
Is this a simple crochet towel topper pattern?
While this isn’t a difficult pattern, there are several pieces and steps. The Flower Towel Topper pattern is rated as intermediate.
How do you make a crochet dish towel?

You’re in luck! The Flower Towel Topper pattern above has a hidden ring for a towel holder. You can use a shower curtain ring, wooden craft ring, or clear plastic ring, as long as the center opening is about 2-3 inches across.
