Pattern Inspiration
Growing up, we decorated the Christmas tree with handmade and family ornaments (both new and old), so it felt personal and special. Unfortunately, my first Christmas tree as an adult was 90% plastic baubles that I’d picked up at Target and the Dollar Tree. I had a couple ornaments I’d crocheted and a few that my mom had gifted and passed down, but nothing can compare to the curated collection of ornaments my parents and in-laws had acquired over 30+ family Christmases.
Over the last few years, I’ve been working on building my ornament collection so my tree can feel more like “me” and less like a display tree at Target. Last fall, I shared the Pretty Present crochet ornament pattern and upgraded my $10 red-and-white felt skirt with a Farmhouse Christmas tree skirt. Plus, I’ve received lots of ornaments from my family (especially my mom who’s already sent me a box of ornaments this year).
After finishing the Muse Shawl, I had some little balls of leftover yarn. I knew I wanted to make an ornament and thought a tiny crochet sweater would be a cute way to highlight the hand-painted yarn. Thus, the Toasty Turtleneck pattern was born!

The Toasty Turtleneck Tools
The official Toasty Turtleneck Ornament pattern calls for about 55 yards of fingering weight yarn (held double). I used two colors of Muse Hand-Painted fingering leftover from the Muse Shawl. The finished mini sweater used about 27.5 yards of each color (Savvy Tonal and Adventure Speckle). You could use up scraps of any fingering weight yarn you have leftover from a larger project. I love how these little turtleneck sweater ornaments look with hand-dyed yarn.
Since you can’t wear this tiny sweater, don’t stress about your gauge or yarn choice. A DK weight yarn would be about the same weight as two strands of fingering. Or, I used one strand of sport weight yarn (Audine Wools Interlock from KnitCrate) for the purple sweater in the picture. Due to this, the finished ornament is smaller than the ornaments crocheted with two strands of fingering.
Now that you have your yarn, it’s time for the hook. Whether you’re using two strands of fingering or one strand of sport or DK weight yarn, you need a teeny tiny crochet hook. Mine’s a 2.5 mm hook from the bright hook set at WeCrochet.

- 55 yards of Muse Fingering (held double) or other #1 fingering weight yarn
- or substitute 25 – 30 yards of #2 sport or #3 DK weight yarn (one strand)
- 2.5 mm crochet hook
- Locking stitch marker
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
Gauge / Size
Gauge isn’t important for this ornament.
Finished ornaments crocheted with two strands are fingering weight yarn are 3 inches long (top of neck to bottom of sweater) x 4 inches wide (wrist to wrist). Ornaments crocheted with sport weight yarn are 2.5 inches long x 3.5 inches wide.
Abbreviations / Techniques
- ch – chain
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- blo – back loops only
- st – stitch
- sk – skip
- invisible hdc decrease
- increasing + decreasing
- invisible join
- weaving in ends
NOTE: This pattern utilizes US crochet terminology.
Pattern Notes
- ch 1 does not count as a st
- Pattern utilizes crochet shorthand. “2 hdc” means to crochet two hdc in one st, “hdc 2” means to crochet one hdc in each of the next two stitches
- Turtleneck is worked in back-and-forth rows then sl st together
- Body is worked in a top-down yoke, from the base of the turtleneck. The sleeves are split in Round 4.
- Body is worked in joined rounds but not turned
- Sleeves are worked in continuous rounds
- If using fingering weight yarn, the pattern is crocheted with two strands held double. You could substitute one strand of a higher weight yarn (e.g., #3 DK weight)

Sweater Christmas Ornament Crochet Pattern
The Toasty Turtleneck sweater Christmas ornament crochet pattern is broken into three main parts: the turtleneck, the body, and the sleeves.
Turtleneck
Hold two strands of fingering weight yarn together, ch 9
ROW 1: sc in second ch from hook, sc across (8)
ROWS 2 – 16: ch 1 and turn, blo-sc across (8)
Joining Turtleneck: ch 1 and turn, join first and last rows with sl st in front loops of Row 16 and back loops of Row 1 (8 sl st total). Turn to begin crocheting the sweater body.
Sweater Body
The sweater body is continued from the base of the turtleneck.
ROUND 1: ch 1, work 16 hdc around the base of the turtleneck (one hdc per turtleneck row), join to first hdc with sl st (16)
ROUND 2: ch 1 (don’t turn), 2 hdc in each st around (32)
ROUND 3: ch 1, hdc around, join to first hdc with sl st (32)
ROUND 4: ch 1, hdc 5, sk 6, hdc 10, sk 6, hdc 5, join to first hdc with sl st (20) [see photo above]
ROUNDS 5 – 9: ch 1, hdc around (20)
Invisible join to first hdc, trim yarn and weave in ends.
Sleeves and Hanger
Join yarn to the armpit of either sleeve. [see photo above]
ROUND 1: ch 1, hdc in each st and two corners (8)
ROUNDS 2-3: hdc around (8)
ROUND 4: invisible hdc decrease, hdc around (7)
ROUND 5: hdc around (7)
FINISHING SLEEVE: Make 2-3 sl st. Trim yarn and weave in ends.
Repeat for the other sleeve.
HANGER: Fold over the turtleneck. Trim an 8-inch piece of yarn and use the tapestry needle to attach to the inside of the turtleneck. Knot at the top to secure the hanger.
