Window Pane Stitch – How to Crochet Tutorial

Learn how to crochet the window pane stitch with this tutorial, video, and stitch chart. Beginner level stitch that uses filet crochet.

Since the Window Pane Cardigan pattern is dropping next week, I figured y’all could use a quick tutorial on how to crochet the window pane stitch. This easy stitch is created using filet crochet, which means that double crochets (dc) and chains (ch) are combined to create open and closed spaces in the stitch. In the video, I refer to these as “windows” and “doors.” The window pane stitch is a little bit lacy, but still structured.

As with most crochet stitches, the window pane stitch can be tweaked and customized for different projects and patterns. Though I used it to crochet an open cardigan, you could use this stitch for other crocheted garments (e.g. tees, sweaters, shawls), or even blankets or pillow covers.

I crocheted rows of solid double crochets in between every four rows of the window pane stitch, in order to provide more stability and variety. You can easily modify this to include more or less frequent solid rows, or even skip them entirely.

Notes

  • The window pane stitch uses a repeat of 11 + 2 (for a turning ch of 2) or 11 + 3 (for a turning ch of 3)
  • turning ch 2 counts as first dc
  • Crochet into the ch space, except when completing the last stitch, then crochet into the top of the turning ch
  • Technically, only rows 2-4 in the pattern, chart, and video are the window pane stitch

Window Pane Stitch Chart

To crochet this swatch, ch 24. The window pane repeat (rows 2-4) is bookended by two solid rows of double crochets (dc), as in the Window Pane Cardigan pattern.
