Twisted Whims Hat – Free Crochet Pattern and Video Tutorial

The Twisted Whims Hat is a little bit slouchy and features a ribbed, fold-up brim. It's created using twisted single crochets and soft Whims Merino yarn. This free crochet pattern also has a full video tutorial.

Pattern Inspiration

Sorry y’all, but there’s not a big design story behind the Twisted Whims Hat. I’m just obsessed with the twisted single crochet stitch. Straight-up, 100% obsessed. After discovering it and realizing it could be used for more than just a border, I knew I had to write up a few patterns to show off the twisted single crochet.

So here’s the first pattern! The Twisted Whims Hat features the twisted sc as the ribbing on the hat’s fold-up brim. This baby is a little bit slouchy and has just the right amount of texture for a simple hat. And if you use the Whims Merino it’s named after, you’ll feel luxurious AF when you put it on your head.

The Yarn – Whims Merino

For the twisted single crochet hat, I chose worsted weight Whims Merino from Furls Fiberarts, and it. is. yummy. It’s a blend of superwash merino and nylon, with 103 yards per 100 gram hank.

This was my first time crocheting with a yarn that didn’t have acrylic in it, so I was instantly impressed by how dense and soft Whims was! It felt so fancy and luxurious in my hands, and the stitch definition was (and still is) amazing! Plus, Whims Merino is a z-twist yarn, which means it’s twisted the other direction so my crochet hooks won’t snag.

On top of all of that, it’s only $10, which is a steal for great quality superwash merino yarn. I used my only two hanks to crochet this beanie, but don’t worry — more Whims is on the way!

The Hook – Rose Gold Odyssey

I reached for my peach and rose gold Odyssey from Furls Fiberarts, which was a birthday present from my mom. The larger size (J, 6.0 mm) helped me achieve the perfect slouch for my toque.

The Odyssey hooks have perfect balance and an ergonomic design, so there’s no wrist/hand pain during crochet marathons. It sounds cheesy, but crocheting with the rose gold Odyssey and the Whims Merino was pretty magical. I typically reach for cheaper acrylic and acrylic-blended yarns, so the combination of a fancy hook with a fancy yarn was like Christmas for my little hands.

Pattern Notes

  • turning ch 1 is not counted as a stitch
  • To customize the hat’s circumference, add or remove rows in multiples of two (ending on a twisted sc row)
  • To customize the hat’s length (e.g. to make it shorter or slouchier), ch any number, but keep in mind that 20 ch are required for the fold-up brim
  • On Row 3 repeats, you’ll be crocheting dc stitches into the back loops of the last odd numbered row. For example, Row 3 dc’s are crocheted into Row 1 dc’s.
  • The back of your project will look like rows of standard double crochets – the twisted sc sections will not be visible.

Twisted Whims Hat Pattern

Using a J 6.0 mm crochet hook, ch 41

ROW 1: hdc in second ch from hook and next 29 ch, dc in last 10 ch (40)

ROW 2: ch 1 and turn. (blo) twisted sc in first 10 dc, (both loops) hdc in last 30 st (40)

ROW 3: ch 1 and turn. (both loops) hdc in first 30 st, (blo) dc into next 10 st (40)

ROWS 4 – 50: Repeat rows 2-3 (ending on a row 2 repeat)

Trim yarn by leaving a tail that’s approximately 1.5 – 2 times as long as the hat.

Using a tapestry needle, whip stitch row 1 to the back loops of row 50. Weave in ends.

Finishing your Twisted Whims Hat

Once Rows 1 & 50 are joined, arrange the hat so the twisted single crochets are on the inside. Fold up the brim.

Cut a piece of yarn that’s 12-18 inches long. Using a tapestry needle, running stitch through the top edge of the top of the hat, pulling it tight as you go. You might need to go around the top 2-3 times before the hole is closed completely. Trim yarn and weave in ends.

Sew on your pom (if desired).
