Striped Mug Cozy – Free Crochet Pattern and Video Tutorial

Practice your color-changing skills with this sweet striped mug cozy. This free beginner crochet pattern uses half-double crochet stitches.

Protect your hands and show off your crochet skills with this new pattern – the striped mug cozy! We’ll use our color changing skills from yesterday’s newbie lesson and our half-double crochet skills from earlier in the week. I think the little button is my favorite part — it makes it so easy to put this little stripey guy on your mug.

The Tools

I chose my worsted weight acrylic yarn (Brava worsted from WeCrochet) because it has more stretch than my cotton yarn. Being a bit stretchy makes it more likely that your mug cozy will fit several different sizes of mugs. I have three types of mugs at my house and it fit all three.

Brava is inexpensive (just $2.49 for 100 grams — that’s enough for seven mug cozies!) and comes in lots of colors. I used Marina and Dove Heather for my samples. Y’all. Marina is yummyyy!

You’ll also need your H 5.0 mm crochet hook, which gives your fabric a tighter weave without gaps, but still lets it stretch to fit a larger mug if needed.
