Are you ready to practice increasing in the cutest possible way? I definitely am! For Day 25 of the Newbie Series, we’ll be using our increases from yesterday to crochet a simple fringed wall hanging with a tapered, triangular bottom and two rows of lace.
It sounds complicated, but you’ll only need half-double crochets, double crochets, chains, and the increasing skills we worked on yesterday.

Have you seen those intricate crochet wall hangings (like this one from Meghan Makes Do!)? So pretty, right?! But damn if it doesn’t look complicated, especially for a new crocheter.
Today, we’ll crochet a simple wall hanging. It’s adorable, there’s fringe, and, most importantly, it’s a perfect project for beginners!

Tools Needed to Crochet a Wall Hanging
Have you noticed that your worsted weight acrylic yarn stretches more than your cotton yarn? That’s good for lots of things! That stretch helped us get a perfect fit on our ribbed beanies and ear warmers.
Buttttt, sometimes we don’t want that. For a wall hanging, it’s possible that the weight of the fabric and fringe can pull down over time and stretch out your project. Not good.
Luckily, we have another yarn to save the day! Dishie cotton is PURRFECT for a crochet wall hanging. It’s smooth, has great stitch definition, and won’t stretch out over time. There are a million colors, but I used Verdigris and Kenai for the sample wall hangings you see in the pictures.
It would cut it pretty close, but you could squeeze THREE simple fringed wall hangings out of one $2.99 ball of Dishie! Don’t you love great value?!

How to Crochet a Simple Wall Hanging
Supplies / Materials
- ~ 70 yards of Dishie cotton yarn (I used Kenai and Verdigris)
- or ~70 yards of your favorite #4 worsted weight yarn
- J 6.0 mm crochet hook
- 10-12 inch dowel or stick (I baked my sticks at 250*F for 45 minutes)
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors

Size / Gauge
4 x 4 inches = 10 rows of 14 hdc
Finished Size: 6.5 x 11 inches
Abbreviations / Techniques
- ch – chain
- hdc – half-double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- sk – skip
- weaving in ends
NOTE: This pattern uses US crochet terminology.

Wall Hanging Pattern Notes
- In Rows 14 and 21, ch 3 counts as one stitch
- For Rows 15 and 22, crochet into the ch space
Simple Crochet Wall Hanging Written Pattern
ch 2
ROW 1: 2 hdc in second ch from hook (2)
ROW 2: ch 1 and turn, 2 hdc in each of the next 2 st (4)
ROW 3: ch 1 and turn, 2 hdc, hdc in next 2 st, 2 hdc (6)
ROW 4: ch 1 and turn, 2 hdc, hdc in next 4 st, 2 hdc (8)
ROW 5: ch 1 and turn, 2 hdc, hdc in next 6 st, 2 hdc (10)
ROW 6: ch 1 and turn, 2 hdc, hdc in next 8 st, 2 hdc (12)
ROW 7: ch 1 and turn, 2 hdc, hdc in next 10 st, 2 hdc (14)
ROW 8: ch 1 and turn, 2 hdc, hdc in next 12 st, 2 hdc (16)
ROW 9: ch 1 and turn, 2 hdc, hdc in next 14 st, 2 hdc (18)
ROW 10: ch 1 and turn, 2 hdc, hdc in next 16 st, 2 hdc (20)
ROW 11: ch 1 and turn, 2 hdc, hdc in next 18 st, 2 hdc (22)
ROWS 12 – 13: ch 1 and turn, hdc across (22)
ROW 14: ch 3 (counts as dc), dc, *ch 1, sk 1, dc* 10 times (22)
ROWS 15 – 20: ch 1 and turn, hdc across (22)
ROW 21: Repeat Row 14
ROWS 22 – 25: ch 1 and turn, hdc across (22)
Trim yarn, leaving a tail of approximately 3 feet
Finishing Off
Align the top of your crochet wall hanging with your stick or dowel. Using your tapestry needle, carefully wrap the yarn around the stick and through the tops of the stitches in Row 25. Since you had 22 stitches in the row, you should end up with ~22 loops on your branch/dowel.
To finish off, add fringe as desired.
I used three ~8 inch long pieces of yarn for each section of fringe, and placed them at the very bottom of the wall hanging and at the ends of most rows.
In order to hang up your creation, you’ll need to add an extra piece of yarn or wire to the top.
