Friends, I’m so excited to share the loop stitch pillow pattern with you! You see, five or six years ago (before I moved to Denver), I thought, “Hey, wouldn’t a striped loop stitch pillow be super cute?” So I made a black and white one. I always planned to post the pattern, but I got distracted with work and moving and whatever else, so writing up a pattern was pushed further and further down my to-do list, until I forgot about it.

- out in the open, on your couch, so every time someone’s like “Ohhh so pretty, I love your pillow,” you can say, “Bitch, I made that!”
The loop stitch pillow is super easy! It’s all single crochets and loop stitches (which are fancy single crochets). If you’re new to crocheting the loop stitch or need a quick refresher, check out my loop stitch post and video tutorial.
Loop Stitch Pillow Materials & Substitutions
For my pillow, I used Caron One Pound yarn in Medium Grey and White. Caron One Pound is a heavier #4 worsted weight yarn. If you replace it with something like Red Heart Super Saver, your pillow will end up being about the same size. However, if you use a lighter worsted weight yarn (like Pound of Love), you may want to add a bit extra to your starting chain.
I also used my trusty Camwood Streamline hook from Furls Crochet (H 5.0 mm). It’s a light-weight, wood hook that helps produces even stitches and reduce hand/wrist strain. I highly recommend the Streamline collection! Camwood is a lighter wood, but Furls also has Teak, Rosewood, and Ebony Streamline hooks.

How to Crochet a Loop Stitch Pillow
Supplies / Materials:
- 330 yards of Caron One Pound in “Medium Grey”
- 170 yards of Caron One Pound in “White”
- H-8 5.0 mm crochet hook (get my hook here)
- 3 1-inch buttons
- 16 x 16 pillow insert
- Stitch markers
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
Abbreviations / Techniques:
- ch – chain
- sc – single crochet
- sk – skip
- st – stitch
- loop stitch – blog post / YouTube video
- changing colors
- crocheting in the round (for the border)
Gauge / Size:
4 x 4 inches = 13 rows of 14 sc
Finished pillows will be 16 x 16 inches
Loop Stitch Pillow Crochet Pattern Notes:
- Your yardage may vary based on the size of your loop stitch loops. Large loops will use more yardage.
- My example pillow has only 8 sections and ends on Color B because I used an I-9 5.5 mm crochet hook. However, I wanted a tighter weave, so I rewrote the pattern for an H-8 5.0 mm crochet hook.
- The pattern consists of three pieces (front, solid back piece, button hole back piece) crocheted together using a single crochet border
Loop Stitch Pillow Crochet Pattern
Front (Make One)
Using Color A (Medium Grey) and a 5.0 mm hook, ch 58
Row 1: sc in second ch from hook, sc across (57)
Row 2: ch 1, turn, loop stitch across (57)
Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc across (57)
Row 4: ch 1, turn, loop stitch across (57)
Rows 5-6: Repeat rows 3-4
Switch to Color B (White)
Rows 7-12: repeat rows 3-4 three times
Rows 13-54: rotate between Colors A and B. Each stripe will have six rows (three repeats of rows 3-4). You will end on a Color A stripe.
Trim yarn and weave in ends.
Back #1 (make one)
Using Color A (Medium Grey) and a 5.0 mm hook, ch 58
Row 1: sc in second ch from hook, sc across (57)
Rows 2-37: ch 1, turn, sc across (57)
Trim yarn and weave in ends.
Back #2 (make one)
Using Color A (Medium Grey) and a 5.0 mm hook, ch 58
Row 1: sc in second ch from hook, sc across (57)
Rows 2-32: ch 1, turn, sc across (57)
Row 33: ch 1, turn, sc 12, *ch 3, sk 3, sc 12* repeat from * two more times (57)
Rows 34-37: ch 1, turn, sc across (57)
Trim yarn and weave in ends.
Sewing on the buttons
Using Color A and a tapestry needle, sew the buttons onto Back #1 (the piece without buttonholes)
Find Row 6 and count 13 stitches from the left side. Sew your first button.
From button #1, count 14 stitches. Sew your second button.
From button #2, count 14 stitches OR count 13 stitches from the right side. Sew your second button.
Preparing to join
Lay Back #2 over Back #1 and put the buttons into the buttonholes.
You should have 10 rows of overlap. Use stitch markers to keep the back pieces in place while you crochet the border (see photo above).
Place the front piece on top of the back piece, with the wrong sides together. The buttons on the back and the loops on the front should be facing out.

Crocheting the border
Join Color A yarn anywhere. ch 1 and sc around all four sides, with three sc in each corner.
Join to the first sc with an invisible join. Trim yarn and weave in ends.
Undo the buttons and add your 16 x 16 pillow insert.
