Yesterday, we learned how to crochet the linen stitch (aka moss stitch aka granite stitch — why does it have so many names?!), and today we’ll use it on the linen stitch dishcloth crochet pattern!
Dishcloths and washcloths are popular beginner crochet patterns because they’re handy to have and simple to make. They’re just squares or rectangles that are 7-8 inches across. Sometimes crochet dish cloths have a border, but this one keeps it simple and borderless.

Linen Stitch Dishcloth Pattern Inspiration
Because there are already so many dishcloth patterns in the world, I’ve only included one in the Newbie Series. HOWEVER, I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite dishcloth patterns over here.
It’s Day 10 of the Newbie Series, which means we’re 1/3 of the way through! It’s also the end of the single crochet unit, so tomorrow I’ll share a round-up of some cute single crochet patterns, and then we’ll learn our next stitch.

The Tools
When you’re making dishcloths (and most kitchen projects), a cotton yarn like Dishie is a must. It’s durable, breathable, and absorbent. It also won’t melt if you’re using kitchen towels or dishcloths as emergency potholders or to pull a baking dish out of the oven.
When I say cotton is durable, I really mean it. My cotton dishcloths and face scrubbies have lasted years without any issues other than a little color fading. They get softer with each wash too! I’ve heard horror stories of acrylic yarn getting gross/moldy when it’s used for dishcloths and scrubbies, so I’ve always stayed away.
My favorite worsted weight cotton yarn is Dishie from WeCrochet/KnitPicks. It’s soft and has excellent stitch definition. For the linen stitch dishcloth, I used the Mulberry and Silver colors, but I also love Verdigris, Azure, Blue, and Kenai. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of the colors.
For my hook, I chose the J 6.0 mm from my Bright Hook Set. The larger hook gives the dishcloth a looser weave and a bit more drape. For a potholder, you’d want a stiffer fabric and a smaller hook, but I feel like dishcloths are meant to be a little bit softer.

How to Crochet a Linen Stitch Dishcloth
Supplies / Materials
- 60-65 yards of Dishie Cotton (I used Mulberry and Silver)
- or 60-65 yards of your favorite #4 worsted weight yarn
- J 6.0 mm crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
NOTE: My friends at WeCrochet provided the supplies for the Newbie Series.
Size / Gauge
4 x 4 inches = 14 rows of 16 stitches (using the linen stitch pattern)
Gauge is not critical for this pattern – slight variations will just result in a larger or smaller dishcloth.
Finished dishcloths are approximately 7.5 inches long x 8 inches wide
Abbreviations / Techniques
- ch – chain
- sc – single crochet
- sk – skip
- linen stitch
- weaving in ends
NOTE: This pattern uses US crochet terminology.

The chart below represents the first six rows of the linen stitch dishcloth crochet pattern. The pattern repeats until Row 26 (or whenever you’d satisfied with the size of you dishcloth.
